Frequently Asked Questions

What is Midtown UNLV?
Midtown UNLV is a private-public partnership to revitalize the Maryland Parkway corridor that serves as the "front door" to the university. By collaborating with private developers, business and residential neighbors, and other public groups, including the Clark County Board of County Commissioners, university officials hope to create a neighborhood with retail shopping, housing, mass transit, entertainment venues, and educational opportunities. What is the current status of Midtown UNLV?
On the UNLV side (west) of Maryland Parkway, some projects that tie in with the Midtown UNLV concept are already under way, including the new student union and Greenspun Hall. The university is also planning to demolish Frazier Hall to create a gateway to the campus.

Who is leading the project?
The leadership is UNLV President David Ashley and Mike Saltman of the Vista Group.

How will Midtown be funded?
Projects are paid for by UNLV through a variety of sources and by private developers.

Are there plans to make the area around Maryland Parkway safer?
As the area is revitalized, the quality of the environment is anticipated to improve, which will have a positive impact on both pedestrian and neighborhood safety.

How will developers accommodate increased parking demands?
On campus, university officials are building parking facilities such as garages according to the campus master plan. Surrounding the campus, UNLV will work with private developers to determine how parking structures could serve UNLV and the Midtown UNLV district on private property.

What types of traffic improvements are being considered?
UNLV, Clark County, and private developers are looking at measures to address traffic and pedestrian safety. Improvements to Maryland Parkway are aimed at calming traffic and making Maryland Parkway a more safe and effective transit corridor.

What multimodal transit planning has been undertaken?
UNLV, Clark County, private developers, and the Regional Transportation Commission are taking a comprehensive approach to transit in the Midtown UNLV area. Transit-oriented development, transit stations, dedicated transit lanes, and innovative transit vehicles are being studied to maximize the quality and efficiency of mass transit systems in the Midtown UNLV area.

Are pedestrian bridges over Maryland Parkway being considered?
Pedestrian bridges were considered but would be counter to the project's goal to create an active streetscape and neighborhood. Using overhead crossings to get people off the street and, therefore, leaving the street solely to vehicles doesn't lend itself to an active streetscape.

What is being done to improve pedestrian safety?
The Midtown UNLV project is focused on providing a pedestrian-oriented environment for education, entertainment, research, housing, and other activities. Elements may include more signal-controlled pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures, better integration of mass transit, and better separation of cars and pedestrians.

What is the timeline for Midtown UNLV?
Projects following the Midtown concept in the next five years include Greenspun Hall, the planned demolition of Frazier Hall, and further improvements on the Maryland Parkway sidewalks and streetscape. Mid-term (approximately five to 10 years) projects potentially include replacing Grant Hall, while long-term (10 to 15 years) projects include additional campus building projects.

Why tear down certain buildings on campus just to build new ones?
UNLV is a landlocked campus with limited space for new buildings, so it needs buildings and facilities to efficiently maximize the land they occupy. The campus master plan calls for replacing outdated buildings with more efficient and effective ones.

What type of mixed-use development planning and project development is intended to occur at Midtown UNLV?
Midtown UNLV is designed to be an integrated mixed-use development with restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, offices, educational facilities, and housing.
